Some great ads, just a shame Nokia phones are trailing behind. After some analysis I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve stuck with Nokia because of Flash Lite. This is no longer the case.

N95 Firmware v30.0.015 – Flash Lite 3.0

with 4 comments

Alessandro posted about the update to the N95 firmware yesterday, so I didn’t waste much time waiting to upgrade. The previous firmware was a bit of a disappointment and I had started looking into ways to downgrade (Didn’t have much joy). Anyway, the upgrade went smoothly but very time consuming, you don’t want to have to reset your machine twice!

In terms of Flash Lite, I’ve noticed that the issue with FLVs switching the phone to landscape has been addressed. I still need to investigate the security sandbox issue, but initial tests seem to show some improvement in terms of speed.

Another addition is automatic screen rotation made possible by the built-in accelerometer. You need to access the display settings to enable this feature. I’ve knocked up a quick example that uses the stage listener to detect when the screen has rotated and update the width and height on the screen.

You can access it directly using your barcode reader;

Barcode link: AutoRotateTest.swf

Or you can get the source here.

Kyte.tv laying the smackdown on Qik and Flixwagon

without comments

Well that is what Mr Scoble thinks; Why Kyte.tv will kill Qik and Flixwagon in cell phone video space

I’m still yet to try out Kyte.tv and Flixwagon. I will do soon and report back on my experience.

Some of the points Scoble makes about the domination of Kyte.tv are easy fixers like video distribution and the chat features.

“Kyte.tv can play videos on an iPhone today”

Do you really want to film with a 2 mega-pixel camera? or upload via a edge network? (Don’t any of you fan boys mention 3G, because it’s not out at the moment.)

“Kyte.tv is way ahead of Qik and Kyte in getting real mainstream celebrities like 50 cent”

Is mainstream even ready for live streaming from your mobile? So far all of my qik videos start with an explanation of what is happening to the person being filmed and is always met with a yeah right!

I think what stands out for me is the funding; Qik $4m, Flixwagon $1m and Kyte.tv have $23.4M to play with, but I would like to know how much Kyte,tv have invested in their mobile streaming proposition.

I’ll keep an eye to see how this one plays out.

iPlayer on the Nokia N95

without comments

Firmware 21.0.016 for the N95 has been released. I was tempted not to bother doing the update, main reason being the age it takes to get your phone back to a customised usable state. Anyway after the update I thought I would try iPlayer to see if I would have more joy then I did with the PS3. Well it worked. Ok, it doesn’t scale to the screen size but you get a good view of the content.

Update.

Not all clips work. I got ‘The Curse of Steptoe and Son’ working straight away.

KuneriLite Beta 0.9.3 is available

with one comment

The latest version of KuneriLite is available for download.

- Improved User Interface and compilation process
- GPS plug-in
- External player launch option (for Flash Lite 2.1)
- Custom project installation directory
- Signing option for Basic version
- Various bug fixes

I’ve created a utility class for the download plugin (FlashLite 2.0, 2.1, 3.0). I’ve got a few methods to add and I need to tidy up and optimize before I release.
